Why Choose Dry Ice Blasting?

7/6/2020 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Mankato/Owatonna, we value knowledge and expertise in many cleanup and restoration techniques. The newest technology we are now offering is Dry Ice Blasting. This is a non-abrasive, non-conducive, non-toxic, and non-flammable cleaning method. It is used as an environmentally friendly way to remove surface dirt, soot or contaminates as it is an approved media by the EPA, FDA and USDA. It easily dislodges the contaminates and is simply swept away or vacuumed up. There is no drying time after use either. This process can be used in cleaning food processing equipment, mold, smoke, fire or water damage, medical devices and other wood or metal production equipment. Dry ice is colorless, tasteless, odorless, waterless, and non-toxic and therefore never compromising taste, quality, or safety. It is even safe for electrical and plumbing fixtures.

How does it work?

Dry ice blasting involves propelling pellets at extremely high speeds. The actual dry ice pellets are quite soft, and much less dense than other media used in blast-cleaning (i.e. sand or plastic pellets). Upon impact, the pellet sublimates almost immediately, transferring minimal kinetic energy to the surface on impact and producing minimal abrasion. The sublimation process absorbs a large volume of heat from the surface, producing shear stresses due to thermal shock.  This is assumed to improve cleaning as the top layer of dirt or contaminant is expected to transfer more heat than the underlying substrate and flake off more easily. The efficiency and effectiveness of this process depends on the thermal conductivity of the substrate and contaminant. The rapid change in state from solid to gas also causes microscopic shock waves, which are also thought to assist in removing the contaminant. (Wikipedia)
