Last-Minute Severe Storm Preparations

6/5/2020 (Permalink)

When severe storms and tornadoes hit southern Minnesota, SERVPRO of Mankato / Owatonna is here to help.

Preparation is key to keeping your family and your home safe during emergencies and disasters. However, if you have not yet prepared for an incoming severe storm or tornado, all hope is not lost. There are a few preparations you can still do a few hours before the storm hits. It is important to keep safety in mind first and stop preparations to find shelter as the storm approaches your area.

  1. Designate a safe room and make sure to place essential items inside. If you do not already have a designated safe room containing an emergency kit, make sure to at least grab food, water, a flashlight, and first aid supplies and head to a room without windows.
  2. Remove tree limbs and outdoor items. Even small items laying around in your yard can cause damage when traveling at high speeds. Bring everything inside that you can.
  3. Secure fences and outdoor furniture. Make sure the chance of flying furniture is at a minimum by tying down furniture and bringing in what you can.
  4. Check gutters. Make sure your downspouts are facing away from your home and clear your gutters of any debris.
  5. Protect valuables. Move valuable items such as a passport or insurance policy to a water-proof bag/container.

Make sure to also consider any specific needs your family has. It is also important to keep the entire household updated on the location of your safe room and any other emergency plans you have.

If a severe storm or tornado affects your home this year, SERVPRO of Mankato / Owatonna is ready to respond immediately. Give us a call right away at 507-200-3700 so we can quickly begin board up and restoration services to prevent further damage and loss.
