Being Prepared Can Save Your Belongings

With all the rain in Mankato recently, it’s a good time to make sure you are somewhat prepared in case of a basement flood. Many people utilize their basement as storage space. If you are storing things in your basement that you don’t want to lose due to water damage, you should consider how you are storing them. Cardboard boxes can soak up water quickly and damage everything inside within a short period of time. Using plastic tubs instead of cardboard boxes can help prevent the water from reaching the important items inside of them. If you don’t want to switch to plastic tubs, placing your cardboard boxes above ground level can be effective as well. Some community members place boxes onto cheap shelving units that keep them off the ground. This is a cost effective way of keeping multiple storage boxes off of the ground and keeping them organized and more accessible than heavy stacked boxes. A cardboard box on a porous concrete basement floor may also lead to mold problems. It is recommended that you store anything biodegradable on metal or plastic shelving at least 18 inches away from the foundation. If you think you have a mold problem or your basement floods, give SERVPRO of Mankato/Owatonna a call, we are here to help.
